S.C: Why the Stage name Daph ?
Daph: It came from the word Mtafutaji which means Hustler in Swahili Daph Dajjie. My classmates used to pay me to write letters and text messages to their girlfriends back in high school. I wrote songs for people. I’m kind of addicted to money. Nobody enjoys being broke. It’s just a way of life…so when someone Calls me, they remind me that I got to be on my grind.
S.C: Tel us about Daph?
Daph: I am Ambitious; man, am hungry for success. I work hard - probably the hardest working in the industry. I’m a fun loving, God fearing dude, down to earth like for real and easy to work with. I’m 18 will turn 19 next year Jan 15 and I love Minute Maid Apple flavor, I had to say that man if you don’t go try it.
S.C : What is the inspiration behind your latest track “Utafanya Nini?”
Daph: I was hanging out with my homie – Brayo- and then this message came saying that I had won 450,000 pounds from a Nokia Promo in U.K that I never participated. So I was like what if this thing was real? That could be a dream fulfilled right there.

S.C: What genre of music do you rep and why?
Daph: I love Hip Hop and Genge, but the latter is a more than music to me. You want to know what it means to me Grind Everyday Never Get Enough. That’s GENGE. It is a lifestyle, but I kind of listen to every genre of music I have no boundaries.
S.C: Who is your role model in the music industry?
Daph: Internationally Weezy , Kanye and Khalifa make me want to go hard every time I listen to a track from any of them and back home I respect everybody who is doing his thing man. Nonini, Juacali and Bamboo are great motivators but there is new talent out there that needs to be heard. Kenya needs to listen to the underground world that’s where dope music is right now believe me man.
S.C: Where do you see yourself five years from now?
Daph: Wow! That’s 2016. I want to enter that year with as many loyal fans as I can, More Money- a lot of money you know money is good for you, Awards - Chaguo La Teeniez, Kisima , and my own production and talent management firm with my artistes. Keep doing my thing and be on another level but I leave all that to God. Watch this space.
S.C: How do you intend to get there?
Daph: Working hard every day no days off, grabbing all opportunities that come my way and doing what I do best- rapping- to keep my fans entertained and interested. If you want to be a billionaire you should be ready to do a billion things and I’m ready. One step at a time I’m going to be there one day.
S.C: How do you intend to stay there?
Daph: Staying relevant and consistent. Doing what put me there in the first place - keeping my fans on an entertaining diet of great music I think will grant me a long stay. I don’t want to taste honey and go back to drinking water.
S.C: Local hip hop and gospel hiphop..whats your take on both of them?
Daph: I’m a firm believer of freedom. I respect what everybody is putting out. I think it’s all about satisfying your fans. Everybody knows what God is capable of , He is not just the Guy in the sky . Its wise not to belittle Him.
S.C: Given an opportunity, what aspect of the Kenyan music industry would you improve on?
Daph: There is hell of underground talent that can entertain Kenya. The media should check out that scene. They are making it hard for an artiste to eat off his hustle.
S.C: What are some of the challenges that you have encountered in your career as an artist?
Daph: Finding producers - Sculls of Scull Digital and V6 of HitSquad- who could believe in me to now having loyal fans who support me didn’t happen in a fortnight. I’m motivated by challenges so I’m looking forward to many of those. Hustling for shows and getting the music on Radio is not that easy. Some producers are so mean they don’t want to push fresh talent at all.
S.C: You in campo, what do you think is lacking in the campus set up to create an everlasting experience?
Daph: Campus is cool. At K.U I’m having fun I’m not complaining. The only thing is that admin thinks that rappers are the violent and less serious students of the institution.
S.C: Given a chance how would you improve the education system?
Daph: The 884 system treats students as vessels to be filled yet they are instruments that should be used. The government should borrow a leaf from developing countries and start embracing Talent nurturing-from-a-younger-age kind of education
S.C: What advice would you give to young aspiring artists?
Daph: There is only one secret, Go hard every day. Put the first things first and God never comes last, find your fans and keep them entertained surround yourself with positive minded people. Always do you - be real. Just enjoy this thing.
